Yeah... I've been struggling a bit with it. So many names... so many "wait wut?" moments and then wracking my brain to try to figure out if I forgot something from earlier.

This is how I felt when trying to get through The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. Heard people raving about how it's the peak of the fantasy genre, and I gave up about 25% of the way through

Okay, I already stopped turking because I was tired...but this is a sign that I just need to sleep...

I actually copied what you wrote, and tried to get Google to translate it. It wouldn't, it just did 'English to English.' So I stubbornly changed the input language to several languages, before I realized what you wrote. No joke.

    On that note, goodnight everyone!

I'm pretty sure this will get good. But for right now it reads exactly like an archaeologist wrote it... his world building is intricate and nuanced and deep... in comparison his character building feels a little less dimensional. But right now it's such a dense read with lots to remember... my brain damage is struggling a bit with the density of the information being presented because I have no idea what is important to remember and what isn't.

no, unlike many other books, he doesn't spend much time with introductory bullshit
book 1 is kind of a mess that way
however, every other book makes up for it.
in book 1, boy is at castle as two important people (fiddler and whiskeyjack) talk, with the empress of malazan
cortillion and shadowthrone kill so many people, before finding sorry and her father, and the hounds didn't kill those two
later, paran meets tattersail, and after he should have died in a sorry incident
falls in love with her, and that becomes a long, drawn out annoying story line that isn't actually necessary
the hand of the empress, adjunct lorn, travels on a quest with an undead warrior who possesses something (for now) that can halt magic
the lord of the dark skin tiste andii is attacked by our heroes, but it hardly bothers him at all, and many important people suddenly die
    - many interesting things happen here that we don't find out about until their own parts of the story in many later books.
I think that's book one without actually ruining anything.

I read it when I was about 14. I think it took me two attempts. Second time round, I really enjoyed it. I hate not finishing books.

Haha... notice how many names were there... and that's only a fraction of the names that march past. At least I know which names to concentrate on now.

Yeah, usually I'll plow through anything because I figure it'll either get better later or at least I'll be able to conclusively say that I don't enjoy it, plus I hate not knowing the end of a story. But much like @Blue@Blue's description, there's so much world building and detail and terms the author made up on one side, and the character just sort of meandering through this world not really doing anything interesting on the other. I'll go back to it eventually but for the moment I switched over to reading more of the Night Angel books by Brent Weeks that I think @Devil_Dawg@Devil_Dawg suggested. It's lighter reading but I enjoy what's happening in it more.

    oh, you want important names?

    paran
    whiskeyjack
    fiddler
    Onos T'oolan
toc the younger, if he's in this book
    anomander rake

there are many, many more, but these are pretty much the most important [of the characters in book 1] through the series (and not necessarily this specific book)
I'm not exaggerating when I say that it's difficult to understand book 1 until after book 3 or 4.

oh, and this author has no problem building up a character and making you think they are important
and they either die, or you never hear from them again

I thought the same when I read them. The world was very rich, but the characters could be a little flat. And there would be connections formed between certain characters that seemed like they kinda came out of nowhere, which confused me and made me wonder a bit why I should care. But it was his first book, so I think that kinda shows. It did improve a lot by the end of the book for me, and I noticed a pretty big improvement in his writing by the second book. As a whole, I really enjoyed it.

And yeah, the names and places were a lot for me to absorb, too. I would often have to skim back through chapters that I had already read, just to be reminded of context and stuff whenever something or someone was mentioned later on. There were even instances where I would have to go back and look through previous books. It's still probably my favorite fantasy series that I've read, though.

Yea the whole... entire.. tattersail parts were useless. Some of it was neat, but he abandoned her and used sinn and the boy for that role (I think)

Yes, the way her character was handled really bugged me.

Like when Paran was staying with her, IIRC she wasn't initially all that impressed with him (I could be misremembering, it has been several years.) Then, like out of the blue, they're sleeping together and Paran is all sprung. I was like, "Wait, what? When did this happen? How?" There was like no lead up or explanation for it, so it was hard for me to feel like she was even that big of a deal to him after she died.
